ORANGE BEACH, AL- Getting from Point A to Point B has never been easy on Canal Road in Orange Beach.
Drivers using this major, east-west highway, however, have gotten some relief.
About two miles of westbound Canal Road have been repurposed. The new stretch of roadway now has two lanes of westbound traffic.
The Alabama Department of Transportation made this possible not by widening the road, but by using existing right of way and re-striping the highway.
The new lane should alleviate traffic tie-ups during tourist season, particularly during hotel and condo check-out times.
The new road will also be resurfaced. The $671,000 road project will be finished by Memorial Day Weekend.
