The nearly six-year legal battle over the BP settlement is finally over.
Today a federal judge in new orleans ordered BP to pay $20 billion for it’s quote “grossly negligent” offshore explosion that killed 11 workers and caused 134 million gallons of oil to spill into the Gulf of Mexico, causing the worst oil spill in U.S. history. The money will be dished out over a 16-year period.
Shortly after the ruling was announced Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange released this statement:
“This final step means that the case against BP is now closed and money that my team worked so hard to secure for the citizens of Alabama will begin to be dispersed in the near future.”
You may remember back in October 2015, Strange announced Alabama will get $950 million for the state’s general fund and another $1 billion to help Alabama coastal communities hit the hardest for economic and environmental restoration.
