No official action will be taken to possibly censure or impeach Governor Bentley until legislators return to Montgomery on April 5th. State Auditor Jim Zeigler filed a report this afternoon which could result in an investigation by the Alabama Ethics Commission.
Zeigler says he filed the report in order to initiate an impartial investigation.
The State Auditor felt he had an obligation to report any unlawful activities he was aware of under state law. Zeigler spelled out four claims against the Governor. The State Auditor alleges that Rebekah Mason was being paid by a non-governmental source for a state job.
The second claim against Bentley involves how the Governor utilized state resources in relation to Mason. The third allegation states that Mason was essentially a lobbyist but not registered as one. Lastly, Zeigler states that Bentley and Mason interfered with an Attorney General investigation.
