An eleven-year-old in Mobile is turning heads with her new fashion line. Jordan Hobbs started sewing when she was nine years old. Her grandmother taught her a few things, but she started watching youtube sewing videos and began sewing by hand. A couple of years later, her mother bought her a sewing machine. Jordan says, “I like to make flowy stuff…skirts and shirts that don’t fit tight.”
Jordan entered her polka-dot themed fashion line, in Coastal Kids Fashion Week back in January, and won the “Best Emerging Designer” award. Her polka dots “popped” on the runway. She won a photo spread in Exalte magazine. This is a picture from that photo shoot that will be featured in the magazine. Thanks Exalte for letting us use it! Jordan and the models are wearing her designs. She says she was thrilled when her name was called out as the winner of the contest, but it was her mom who was the most excited! Sharnee Hobbs says, “When she won, I was a proud mama! I was screaming.”
To say Sharnee Hobbs is a proud mama is an understatement, and she has every reason to be! First off, Jordan is a straight “A” student, and just was selected as 5th grade Student of the Year for her school, Old Shell Road School of Creative and Performing Arts. Sharnee says Jordan does her homework every afternoon first, and then spends the remainder of her day sewing. She can whip up a skirt in about an hour. Sharnee calls her daughter, “amazing.”
Jordan would one day like to go to design school, and hopefully become a big name fashion designer, and she is well on her way! She will be debuting another fashion collection during Coastal Kids Fashion Week April 6-8 in Mobile.
