JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) – Officials with Jefferson County Schools confirm that a member of their school board passed away this morning in an accident.

Dean Taylor, Jr. died around 3:30 a.m. this morning in a single-vehicle accident. It happened on Mt. Olive Road, near the Buckshort bridge north of Gardendale.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, when deputies arrived at the accident scene, they found a 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe had left the roadway, traveled down an embankment, and struck a tree. Taylor, 35, was the lone occupant, and was found in the front seat of the vehicle. He died at the scene.

Taylor is believed to have been traveling north on Mt. Olive Rd when he lost control and left the roadway. A passerby spotted the vehicle and called 911.

Jefferson County Schools Superintendent Dr. Craig Pouncey said Taylor, “cared deeply for the district’s students, parents and employees. Our focus now is on his family, his son and mother.”

Taylor had been a board member since November of 2014.

More information is expected to be released by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
