Near Mount Vernon in north Mobile County, firefighters are battling a large wildfire. According to the update this afternoon, the fire has grown to 100 acres in size.
The Alabama Forestry Commission (AFC) and Wildland firefighters are battling the blaze along with volunteers from surrounding fire departments.
The AFC is using aircraft and bulldozers to help control the spread of the blaze.
A request has been made to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) for the use of a helicopter with a bucket unit to drop water from the air. The use of a helicopter is to get to areas unreachable on the ground.
As a precautionary measure, the AFC is requesting that all UASs (drones) avoid the air space surrounding the fire. Firefighting aircraft will be required to suspend the air assault if drones are detected in the area.
