A lot of people keep hearing about the growth of the eastern shore and Baldwin County. But now you can see it just about everywhere, especially in Daphne.
A number of retail projects are underway. They include a development that will soon be under construction at the site of the old Office Depot building, across from Jubilee Square on Highway 90. Developers of Daphne Commons have yet to name the businesses that will locate here.
Just down Highway 98, across from Target and next door to the Popeye’s Chicken restaurant is where Shore Oaks Retail Center is located. Some businesses have been named for this one, including a new Serda’s Coffee Shop, which has a popular following at it’s downtown location in Mobile. A Mediterranean restaurants and Hibachi restaurant are also slated for this location.
Also on Highway 98 at Johnson Road, it’s not retail, but housing that is going up. The large Colonnade at Eastern Shore apartment complex is slated to have 19 buildings and 240 units.
Some of the growth in Daphne is headed east toward Malbis and Highway 181. Businessman Kevin Spriggs is putting up a new building to house a real estate and mortgage company next to his Malbis Shell location. Just up the road is more construction that will be the site of a Mugshots Grill and Bar restaurant and a Tropical Smoothie franchise.
The growth isn’t limited to retail and housing. The City of Daphne is busy expanding the parking lot at one of its most popular tourists attractions, Gator Alley. It’s part of a plan to upgrade recreational facilities in the city that will also see improvements at Lott and Trione Parks, among others.
