Fairhope’s Virginia Green has already won two girl high school state championships and four Alabama junior titles —what’s next —-playing on the pirates boys team!
Virginia comes from a golf family. Her older brother is on the University of Alabama golf team, and it was playing in his shadow that showed her she can play with the boys.
Her coach and teammates are on board with Virginia’s transition. She’s already verbally committed to play college golf for Vanderbilt and challenging the boys in high school will only make her better.
Playing on a boys team is nothing new. Mobile’s Beth Barry did it 35 years ago at the University of South Alabama. The new school didn’t have a women’s program, and she was good enough to compete with the guys.
Beth, who’s made a record 39 hole in ones in her amateur career, offers this advice to Virginia, “Virginia didn’t sign up to just play with the boys, she’s playing to win…….”
