The McGill-Toolen Yellow Jackets topped the defending Class 7A state champion Hoover Buccaneers 77-74 in double overtime Thursday to advance to the championship game of 2016 AHSAA State Finals. Hoover and McGill-Toolen were tied at the end of regulation at 60 and at 67 all after one overtime.
With six seconds left in the second overtime, McGills Rene Scott sank two free throws to seal the victory.
McGill will face Central-Phenix City in the Boys Class 7A championship game Saturday at 5:45 p.m.
McGill’s Lady Jackets also earned a berth in the 7A finals Saturday by edging out Hazel Green 54-53.
The Lady Jackets will return to the Championship game for the second year in a row after overcoming a nine-point deficit. McGill will face Jeff Davis who won last year’s matchup between the two by one point.
McGill-Toolen will play in the Girls Class 7A championship game Saturday at 4 p.m. at the BJCC Legacy Arena.
