Hubbard Given Week to Delay Trial

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – A judge has given House Speaker Mike Hubbard a week to ask for a delay in his ethics trial now scheduled to overlap with the upcoming session.

Lee County Judge Jacob Walker gave Hubbard’s lawyers a Jan. 15 deadline to file a motion to continue after a shakeup in his legal team. Hubbard’s lead lawyer, Mark White, withdrew from the case Friday citing an undisclosed conflict of interest.

Hubbard is scheduled to go to trial March 28. That trial date coincides with the 2016 legislative session.

Defense lawyer Bell told Walker in a Friday hearing that it was unlikely they could be ready for trial in March.

Prosecutors told the judge that they would oppose a delay in the trial that has already been postponed once.
