A local company says they’ve come up with a solution to dropped phone calls in the tunnels.
The problem has been notorious in the George Wallace and Bankhead Tunnels where drivers will almost certainly lose signal.
But workers at Southern Light have installed antennas at each end of the tunnels that will shoot cell signals directly through.
“We are constantly looking for areas like this where we can help improve coverage,” said Southern Light CEO Andy Newton.
Wireless carriers can tap into the company’s fiber network. So far two carriers have the capability including Verizon.
“It is definitely something that cell phone users have complained about and the Alabama department of transportation has helped us a lot in fixing this issue so I think they have noticed it too,” said Newton.
The company hopes to have everything up and running in the Bankhead tunnel by the end of January.
They say it will take three months for the process to be completed for the Wallace Tunnel.
