Tying Student Performance to Teacher Pay

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – The Republican leader of the Alabama Senate wants to push a bill to boost teacher pay to the highest in the Southeast, but those raises could come with some changes for teachers.

Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh says he wants to raise teacher pay, but he says taxpayers would also expect measures of student performance.

Marsh says the bill could include changes to tenure law and the use of student test scores, measuring how students improved during the year, to evaluate teacher performance.

He says the bill is still under development but will be a top priority in the legislative session that begins Feb. 2.

Alabama Education Association President Sheila Remington says she was concerned about too much emphasis on student test scores.
