Inmate Dies In Custody

A 21-year-old-man from Pensacola died in the Escambia County, Florida jail early Wednesday morning.

Authorities say Samuel Averheart was found unresponsive in the jail’s infirmary unit around 3:00 am Wednesday. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

Averheart was arrested November 10 for violating his parole.  He was being held without bond.

According to Escambia County authorities, Averheart was treated at a local hospital for an undisclosed medical condition before being transferred to the infirmary.

The cause of death is under investigation.
