Estimates from the Alabama Film Office reveal that movie and production companies spent more in 2015 than last year. About $55.2m was spent in Alabama this year compared to $50.8m in 2014.
Much of that is due to Alabama’s tax incentives designed to attract movies and TV productions to the state. Productions are eligible for a 25 percent reimbursement on taxes paid for goods and services in the state. They can also earn a 35 percent reimbursement for taxes on hiring people based in Alabama.
The film office says with the latest figures production companies collectively will collect about $14.8m once audits of their expenses are done by the state at the end of the year. That is still well below the cap state legislators put on those reimbursements, set at $25m this year.
