A man from Saraland is now in Mobile Metro jail, accused of hitting an 8-year-old boy on a bicycle, then leaving him there.
28-year old Andrew Brent Cooley has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injury, first-degree assault, and DUI. Cooley’s address is just a few homes away from the victim’s.
News 5 talked with neighbors near the scene of the accident Wednesday. They told us they were distressed to hear what happened.
“The little boy rides his bike everyday after school down the street, and I’m just worried about him,” said David Helveston, neighbor.
“Every time somebody gets down he’ll help them up, he’s very helpful. I just want everybody to know that he needs your prayers,” said Kolby Pierce, Friend.
The 8-year-old boy is now recovering in the hospital, but the concern isn’t just about him in this case, it’s what will happen to their other neighbor, Cooley.
“He shouldn’t have even been able to drive a vehicle, let alone be out in society if he’s going to continue to drink,” said Helveston.
Saraland Police is still investigating what happened. Jail documents show there was a hold for a prior DUI charge in Fairhope and it also show he had a prior assault charge.
“I hope he’ll be playing with us soon again,” said Pierce.
In the meantime, friends wish the victim a speedy recovery. At last check, Saraland Police say the boy is still listed in critical condition.
