The city of Mobile is getting national recognition for their efforts to tackle homelessness among veterans.
City officials along with worker from Housing First, a local non-profit, took a call from HUD Secretary Julio Castro Tuesday.
Castro wanted to offer congratulations for mobile having a functional zero homeless population.
Housing First has taken on the effort to find a housing solution for any veteran that comes through their doors.
“If someone goes and gives their life or their service for this country, they ought to have decent place to live. They deserve that if they want that,” said Housing First CEO Eric Jefferson.
On any given night as many as 60,000 veterans are deemed homeless. Mobile is one of only 4 cities to get the ‘functional-zero’ designation.
