Sea Lab Discovers What Killed Manatee in Mobile Bay

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) – Marine officials say a manatee found dead in Mobile Bay apparently died after being hit by a boat.

The Dauphin Island Sea Lab says the case is the first adult manatee death in Alabama blamed on a boat strike.

A manatee known as Zewie was first tagged by researchers in the Mobile-Tensaw Delta in 2010. The mammal became known as a regular seasonal visitor on the Alabama coast and was often seen with other manatees.

But Zewie’s body was found in Mobile Bay on Aug. 21.

Dauphin Island Sea Lab scientist Ruth Carmichael says the case shows boat strikes are possible even in large bodies of water with few manatees.
