Thursday night city officials unveiled the long awaited, brand new turf fields at Sage Park. Mayor Stimpson was joined by members of “Go Kickball South Alabama.”
The team regularly uses the park. Three fields have the artificial turf.
They will be used for soccer, football, lacrosse and other sports.
The city spent 1.6 million dollars on the project. They think it will save money in the long term, because artificial turf needs less maintenance.
News 5 spoke with Mayor Sandy Stimpson at the ceremony.
“It’s artificial turf, it’s got the black rubbery cushion in it. The projected life on something like this is ten plus years. The neat thing is, you can have a pouring down rain and if it’s not lightning, you can still come out and play, because it drains so well.”
The project took one year to complete. It’s the only public, artificial turf field in the city of Mobile.
