Gator Hunting Season Begins Thursday Night

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) – Teams of hunters will head out in search of alligators beginning Thursday, when Alabama’s only regulated hunt for the beasts is set to begin.

Al.com reports that this will be the 10th season on the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, where surveys confirm the area to have the highest density of alligators in Alabama.

Despite a decade of being hunted, Technical Assistance Biologist and state Alligator Program Coordinator Chris Nix said annual surveys of southwest Alabama’s gator population reveal it remains stable.

Nix, who began his career with the Alabama conservation department just a couple of months before the first hunt 10 years ago, said he does not believe the hunts have had any negative impacts on gator numbers, size distribution or behavior.
