BAY MINETTE– Thousands of people who thought their court cases were resolved and their fines paid in full in Baldwin County have been mailed invoices for additional fees.
The Baldwin County Circuit Clerk’s Office has fielded hundreds of angry calls, but it’s not their fault.
A computer programming/clerical error at the state level failed to tack on an additional $15.50 in court costs per case under new legislation that was passed last year.
The Alabama Office of Courts caught the error and is now requesting payment.
Interest could be added to the $15.50 if the outstanding balances aren’t paid on time.
It gets worse: folks wanting to clear up the mess and pay the fee by credit card will be charged an additional “convenience fee.”
