UPDATE: 1:30PM WEDNESDAY
The Foley Beach Express Toll bridge re-opened to drivers at 1:30pm on Wednesday after crews found no structural damage in their inspection.
As a good gesture, there will be no tolls collected on the bridge until 6:00am Thursday morning. This comes after many drivers experienced traffic nightmares from the bridge being closed.
News 5 will have more on the bridge tonight in our 5PM, 6PM, and 10PM newscasts.
ORIGINAL STORY: 5:45AM WEDNESDAY
The Foley Beach Express Toll Bridge is closed until further notice. Around 2:30am a barge on the intracoastal waterway hit the safety barrier of the bridge and knocked out a 60 foot section. Orange Beach City Administrator Ken Grimes says the safety barrier did what it was supposed to do and the bridge piling was not hit.
The bridge still needs to be inspected for any potential damage. That inspection will happen sometime today when the company that actually owns the bridge gets to town. Floating debris from the safety barrier will be a concern for any boaters in the area. Grimes says recreational boaters need to use caution and keep an eye out for anything in the water.
The bridge will be closed at least until later today. Traffic will need to divert around to Highway 59 in Gulf Shores.
