A historic afternoon for Mobile and the local aerospace industry. The components for the very first Airbus A320 to be assembled in Mobile, Alabama have arrived. The cargo ship, BBC Fuji, entered Mobile Bay just before 6:00 P.M. on Wednesday. WKRG News 5 flew over the ship as it entered our local waters. We were able to snap exclusive pictures and video of the BBC Fuji. As you can see, there was picture-perfect weather for this exciting day.
The ship left the Port of Hamburg, Germany on May 29. The nearly three week journey at sea was pretty much uneventful with no major problems reported. You cannot see all of the parts being transported on this ship. They are stored under the deck in a cargo area.
The ship is carrying the following airplane parts:
- the wings
- the front fuselage, which includes the cockpit,
- the rear fuselage, which includes the tail cone
The Airbus assembly plant, which is located at the Brookley Aeroplex, will assemble different versions of the A320 aircraft family. Those models include the A319, A320, and A321. The first plane assembled here locally will be an A321ceo for JetBlue. Delivery is expected in 2016.
