Students at Leinkauf Elementary School are getting a big surprise when school starts back up in August.
While they’re out for summer vacation, local artist Joe Wilson, is inside painting a beautiful mural on the walls of the school cafeteria.
Wilson has been painting these school murals for 30 years. Leinkauf is the 38th Mobile County Public School that now has his mural on its walls. For the cafeteria at Leinkauf, Wilson went with a Mobile-inspired piece, with the focus of the room being a painting of Bellingrath Gardens. He says he hopes he can be an inspiration to children who love art as much as he does.
“When I see a child and they bring me their artwork, I’ll go buy some art pads and some pencils and when they come back, I’ll have it, and if they come back, I’ll say, ‘here, I want you to have this. I want you to work on it’ and if they show that interest, then that’s what it’s all about,” says Wilson.
Some of the other schools sporting Wilson’s artwork are J.E. Turner, Semmes Elementary, Semmes Middle, E.R. Dickson, and Pearl Haskew Elementary just to name a few. Each school uses funds from PTA fundraisers to pay for the paintings.
